Tis the Season! Local cold season Best Practices that is!

The Horticultural expert ladies (Alex Wofford and Odille Huchette) at the Reid Greenhouse at NCA@T ready their outdoor beds and community pots for very cold temperatures predicted for Saturday and Sunday night.

They use a row cover cloth which is semipermeable spunbonded polypropylene so that light and air can get through during the day while enough heat is trapped to keep the plants from suffering damage at night. They purchased this row cover material from Jonny Seeds but it is available from many other sources.

Happy Fall from Oak Ridge Elementary!

These pictures are of the COLTS GARDEN and the READING GARDEN at Oak Ridge Elementary. Shared by Mari Snipes, 5th grade teacher.

The Aces Garden Club works hard on their Colts Garden!

The kids are creating just the right garden soil in the beds, mulching around muddy areas, and planting fall veggies.

The students can take a break and read in the reading portion of the garden. The older students help the younger ones with their planting.

Garden based learning is alive and well with Kindergarteners at Irving Park!

Teacher Marieke Maccione and her UNCG Service Learning student Sonny Yang led a lesson with kindergarteners about soil and life cycles in their garden right outside their classroom door. Caterpillars forming chrysalis, sweet potato plants maturing, planting young seedlings all going on.

Students dug soil samples, put them in zip lock bags and took them
back into the classroom.

Magnifying glasses were handed out for up close observations. Students made drawings and wrote descriptions in their science journals.

Every Monday Mrs. Maccione conducts garden based hands-on lessons with her students. The students love it and share with each other and their teacher and their Service Learning buddy what they discover!

McLeansville Garden enjoys the last of summer weather!

Exciting day in the garden today! We harvested our watermelon and ate it garden side.

It was really sweet and juicy.

The kids loved it. We also found lots of black swallowtail caterpillars in their 4th instar, and 1 was forming a chrysalis, in our dill! It is one of their faves.

Kiser Middle School shares its garden experiences!

Julia Moore, 6th grade language arts teacher
Hello!
Kiser Middle School received a grant from Lowe's May 2014. We were already in the process of growing our 1st school garden at that point. The grant allowed us to have a gardening club this year as well as  do a fall and spring harvest. (Summer veggies are currently in bloom). We held two family fun night events. In the fall, we gave out the sweet potatoes that we grew. This past April, we made salads from the veggies we harvested form the garden. This has been an amazing experience...
Can't wait to see what they do this fall!

Johnson Street Global Studies school garden!

At Johnson Street Global Studies students tend three large gardens around the school where we grow vegetables, flowers and fruit: one for kindergarten, one for elementary and one for middle school.  The garden  program was started many years ago and is always changing. For the past four years we have also partnered with FoodCorps and Guilford County 4-H to bring additional hands-on garden learning to our school. This spring we hope to add an outdoor classroom with benches and an herb garden.

Students also learn about food and nutrition by cooking and tasting the vegetables they grow as well as completing service learning projects. For example, last fall the ACES after school program sold over 80 pounds of sweet potatoes they grew to raise money to purchase healthy meals for several school families in need of cheer over the holidays.

Come visit us anytime!  You can see our apple trees, sit at a picnic table and admire the daffodils, or taste some yummy carrots!
