The Summerfield Elementary school garden is growing!

  The Summerfield Elementary school garden is growing!  Students planted a wonderful spring garden mix of radishes, snow peas, onions, lettuces, Swiss chard, kale, spinach and broccoli.  The photo below shows some of our snow peas growing nicely up a trellis.  Spinach and radishes can be seen in the background.

 We planned our planting times to assure there would be edibles to share for our Healthy Vikings tasting event in May.

McLeansville Elementary builds a new school garden!

With help from an enthusiastic and energetic crew, McLeansville's school garden is up and running! Master Gardener Mentor Carol Spratley, played a great supporting role along with a crew of teachers headed by 3rd/4th grade teacher Jamie Lee, Principal Shervawn Sockwell lends her strong support to the gardening project.

Cherry tomato transplants were provided by Odile Huchette and Alex Wofford in the Reeid Greenhouse at NCA&T as part of the Urban Ag program.

Square foot gardening will be used in some of the beds.

The whole campus is getting involved, here they are making observations in their journals of the new garden. We look forward to updates from this wonderful school with a brand new garden!

Hampton Elementary School Community based Garden Build!

Thyais Maxwell, Principal,  Johnette Walser, Social worker, Laura Tew, Master Gardener Mentor, Skip Crow, Cottage Grove Initiative, and Cynthia Nielsen, School Garden Network have been planning the creation of Hampton’s school garden for the past 6 months. Habitat for Humanity had generously agreed to fund the garden construction. The day finally came this last Saturday! Here is Johnette Walser posing at the “before” site where the garden was planned to be created.

 Mrs. Klawitter Media Specialist and teachers Mrs. Summerrell, Ms. Youngblood, Mr. Smith, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Williams, and Mrs. Alexander and 16 students were all present and played important parts in the garden build.

Community support was great with many neighborhood Church partners getting involved. We had volunteers from Good News Baptist Church, New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, and Living Hope Missionary Baptist Church.

A dedication day celebration is being planned for later in the spring to include Habitat for Humanity and other key supporters. Go Eagles!

Guilford Elementary, Congratulations on Lowe's Toolbox Grant for Garden building!

Teacher Thomas Gray and his 3rd graders at Guilford Elementary dug in and planted a garden last fall.

Now they are getting ready to expand with funding from Lowe's Education Toolbox grant.

Growing Vegetables at School and Home Workshop at Irving Park Elementary

Guilford Parent Academy partnered with the School Garden Network to bring the young and mature together in the garden at Irving Park Elementary last Thursday. 

We enjoyed learning together from a number of school garden educators. Sarah Crawford, current garden director at Caldcleugh Multicultural Arts Center, began by sharing about planting, spacing, thinning, and transplanting techniques.

Melissa Tinling of Food Corp and Eliza Hudson from Gso Montessori shared their planting with children techniques. Everybody had a great time!

Johnson Street Global Studies school garden!

At Johnson Street Global Studies students tend three large gardens around the school where we grow vegetables, flowers and fruit: one for kindergarten, one for elementary and one for middle school.  The garden  program was started many years ago and is always changing. For the past four years we have also partnered with FoodCorps and Guilford County 4-H to bring additional hands-on garden learning to our school. This spring we hope to add an outdoor classroom with benches and an herb garden.

Students also learn about food and nutrition by cooking and tasting the vegetables they grow as well as completing service learning projects. For example, last fall the ACES after school program sold over 80 pounds of sweet potatoes they grew to raise money to purchase healthy meals for several school families in need of cheer over the holidays.

Come visit us anytime!  You can see our apple trees, sit at a picnic table and admire the daffodils, or taste some yummy carrots!

GROUND BREAKING OF LEADERSHIP GARDEN

April 18^th, 9:00-Noon  PHASE 1 of the Community Garden

Greensboro, NC, April 10, 2015– The Leadership Garden is a great way to incorporate the community and the school to result in a successful outcome for our future leaders.  While the garden will serve to integrate multiple educational disciplines, it will also give students the opportunity to learn and hone skills that will assist them in sustaining a healthier lifestyle and a harmonious community.  This is a culminating event as our students learned and researched about hunger and homelessness, obesity and anti-bullying.  Your support in this event will reaffirm an unyielding commitment to creating smart, sensible, healthy and empathetic leaders who lead by example.

Welcome remarks by Dr. Sheila Gorham (Principal), Leilana Chanthavong (FBLA President), Eryka Baker (Student Council President) and Cynthia Nielsen (School Garden Network Coordinator).

Team Organization

Coordination of teams and tasks coordinated by Tonja Atwater (Bed Construction, Compost Distribution, Painting, Birdhouse Assembly, Bird Feeder (made from recycled materials) and vegetable/plant markers.

9:30AM - Noon

All participants are invited to assist in the construction of our Community Garden.  We have invited students from the neighboring elementary schools (Frazier & Archer), Smith HS, community churches and other organizations.  High school students needing Service Learning Hours can locate this even on Noble Hour and keep track of their service-learning hours.
